Mammoth Cave - Good Springs Loop/Buffalo Trail
March 2007
Park City , KY
posted by Wade
My wife and I took the dog up to Mammoth Cave this weekend. We hiked a loop combining the Good Springs Loop trail and instead of following it on around in a clockwise direction we turned south and came back on the Buffalo trail. The Buffalo Trail is basically an old dirt/gravel road. I normally ride Buffalo as a means to access good mt biking on a bike so it was nice to slow down and check it out at a slower pace.
The wonderful thing about hiking at Mammoth Cave in the Spring season is that you run across so many homestead sites. The best way to find them is to keep in the lookout for dafodils growing in a concentrated area. It must have been a rule in the 1800s to plant dafodils when you built a house.
We saw at least 10 spots where homesteaders lived. Most are just level patches with some block stones laying around as leftovers of a foundation or chimney. You can also sometimes see an old washtub or other small metal objects which are being swallowed up by undergrowth. At one of the homesteads we found an old well which greatly intrigued my dog. It was everything we could do to get her not to jump in after that other dalmation that was looking back up at her.
We also saw a large sink cave, a few other smaller caves, some small creeks with drops that created little waterfalls, some turkey, and some deer. One of which had some nice white socks on.
We only saw one group of horseback riders during the 7 mile hike.
