St Barth's Island Loop

June 2004

posted by Wade

The island of St Barths (Barthelemy) was a stop on our 2004 Windjammer cruise. The windjammer cruises are usually 2-3 masted sail boats with lower deck cabins. They are alot of fun, especially if you want to see several islands in one trip. It allows you to get a taste of each island and sample the major attractions.
On St Barts, there were several attractions. We were told there was some good diving and snorkeling and of course some ocean fishing. We opted for the self guided island tour here though. We were told you could do the entire loop in a day by renting a vehicle. We went to rent mopeds, but decided not to once we were there for safety reasons. The roads looked busy.
We rented a Suzuki Samurai 4X4 and took off. I love those little vehicles. I had one in college and they are a blast to drive around. The roads are narrow, and there was quite a bit of traffic zipping around, narrowly missing one another. We found a small beach bar on the back side of the island and hung out, ate, and snorkeled. the snorkeling was okay, we saw a few very large fish, but not much in the way of colorful species. Be warned, St Barts is expensive. I got a beer and a plate of fries at that beach bar, and it cost me $10 in US dollars.
That night we hung out at Le Select. It's a bar with an outside courtyard. There are flags hanging, and big trees growing up. It's a really cool place. You go up to a little window in the side of the building and order beers. They had good food, and the atmosphere was cool. It was very much like a college hang out. there were guys with dreadlocks, and people who looked like they were counting their pennies to buy the next beer. It was a good spot to mingle with ex-patriots from all over the globe. It gave me the impression that St Barths was a mixture of alot of people who weren't from St Barths originally.
