Sunshine's Beach Bar - Nevis

June 2004
Nevis

Nevis is a small volcanic island in the Eastern Caribbean. It is not very populated, but it has an amazing little bar you have to check out if you go.

Sunshine's is the quintessential beach bar. It is made of crude materials like palm leaves, drift and scrap wood, old oil drums, etc. But the people running the bar are such great people who love tourists and generally want to have a good time. They serve a drink called the Killer Bee which is a potent rum punch cocktail. It isn't your typical rum punch, so watch out if you have a few.

I ate there, and the garlic butter conch was superb. The food was well prepared and slightly overdone, but not in a bad way... the way it needs to be at a beach bar. So that you're sure it's safe.

We also took a trip with an American expatriot who now lives on Nevis. He was a botanist in the US and now wears jelly shoes and colorful shirts and leads groups on a "deadly plant" hike on the side of the volcano. He picks flowers and plants that can kill a person or animal. He points out flora and fauna and explains some island history.

At Sunshine's you'll probably get asked if you want to buy some Ganja, or an old music tape, or a fake gold watch. But a polite, no thanks will send them on their way if you aren't interested. And you can keep sippin on your red stripe or your killer bee. They also have a nice place to snorkel. Nothing crazy good, but an easy walk on pebble beach to some waist-neck high snorkeling with colorful fish.

It feels more like Jamaica than the Eastern Caribbean. Check out their Sunshine'swebsite for more details. One easy way to get there is to take a Windjammer cruise that lands on Nevis. I understand that they normally dock near Sunshine's. They did when we went.

They are a blast. This was only one of the 5 or 6 stops we made. Each days is a new adventure, and each night is a party. A little too much party sometimes.

I'll post some more trip reports sometime on some of our other stops.
