Bristol Mt - Yowch!!

January 2007
Bristol , NY
posted by WinterWarlock

I'm afraid this isn't as good a report as I'd like to give -

I went to ski Bristol Mountain Ski Resort this past Saturday. It was a great day - it was about 34F, and was snowing lightly. I had just purchased new skis - Fischer RX4's in 165cm length - and was anxious to try them out. We went out around 10AM - the snow picked up, and the top of the mountain was a bit foggy, but not so bad we couldn't see. After about 4 1/2 hours on the easy slopes, I decided to try one of the intermediate slopes - I made it down about halfway, with one fall. My wife and I stopped before we continued on, and I left first to hit a part of the hill - after carefully winding my way back and forth, I needed to turn back to the right to continue down the hill - that's when it happened. As I started to turn right, my left binding completely fell off the ski, my boot dragged and spun me around. As I looked down at the ground, I saw the tail of my right ski pointing forward, as I felt a pop and a crack, then a big tumble.

After a ride in the sled (always thought that would be cool) and a trip to the hospital, I discovered I had fractured my femur right up next to the ball joint, and that I likely dislocated/relocated the joint during the fall. They decided it did not need surgery, but I am home now and told to put NO weight on this leg for 6-8 weeks (yea, that'll be easy).

So much for skiing this year, and so much for a planned snowshoe hike in the Adirondack High Peaks during February break. I'm done for a while - apart from catalogs and magazines.

I did want to say that the Ski Patrol team at Bristol was excellent - Steve, Gerry, Scott and whoever else helped. Thank you all very much. My wife and I appreciate your concern and professionalism (they even called me a couple days later to see how I was doing).

"I felt a pop and a crack".... I gritted my teeth when I read that line. Man, I hate that for you. At least you should be healed up by the time backpacking season rolls around. But still. Ouch!
