The Great Float 2006 - Green River
July 2006
Brownsville , KY
posted by Wade
This summer (july 06) I took a trip from the Green River Ferry to the Houchins Ferry in Mammoth Cave National Park. The trip can be done in a day, but my group decided to do it in two days.
It had rained pretty heavy the week before causing the Green River to be more of a brown river. But the river moved well and the scenery was beautiful. We stopped on the first day at a large gaping cave to the south, river left. This is at a place called Turnhole Bend. The cave was huge and you coul walk into it's huge entrance, but couldn't go to far back because it narrowed down and became ful of water. The cool thing was talking inside the giant ampitheater of a cave. It echoed and was very loud.
Next we topped at an island and skipped stones, drank a few brews, and fished a bit.
Nobody caught anything today, probably because the water was so murky.
Our last stop of the day was at Sand Cave Island. There is a "Sand Cave" in which Floyd Collins was once trapped and died, spurring national attention in the early 1900s. But this island isn't really near the cave, it's just full of sand. It was fun to hang out in the sand and dive off a small embankment into the river.
Then we finally arrived at our island camp only to discover it was flooded over. We did some scouting though and found that the bank had some nice flat areas that could accomodate our group. We set up camp and hung out, cooking and telling stories into the night.
The next day we were all tired and ready to go. We loaded up, paddled the two miles out and took off for home. Just in time, it started sprinkling during the drive.
