Mountain Biking at Fort Duffield
November 2006
West Point , KY
posted by wkumtrider
Fort Duffield is located in West Point, KY, which is about 25 miles west of Louisville, KY. The park is a Civil War fort that sits on top of huge hill. This fort was used in the civil war to protect Louisville and Elizabethtown from the confederate army. At the top of the hill is the earthworks structures that made up the fort. They are really neat to see, and are considered the oldest civil war fortification in KY.
Anyway, about biking. Fort Duffield is on basically a huge hill. This park has about a 4-5 mile cross country trail and a cool downhill/freeride course. The downhill/freeride has been rebuilt and includes new jumps and banked turns. You definitely need a freeride or downhill bike to take advantage of this course.
Part of the cross country course was redone as well. The cross country trial consists of quite a bit of climbing. The trail runs along some extreme drop offs and cliffs. This is not the place for an inexperienced rider. The trails are currently covered with leaves which makes the course a little slick and sometimes difficult to see the trail. If you have never been, it can be confusing connecting all the different trails. There are also some hiking trails for those that don't like to ride.
A cross country and downhill race are held here every year in the spring. If you are in the area I recommend you to check it out. It is a lot of fun.
