Fall Creek Falls
September 2004
Pikeville , TN
posted by Wade
I participated in the Fall Creek Falls Adventure Race in September of 2004. We had a co-ed team with two males and one female. The race cut-off time was 12 hours and we came in at 11 hours and 50 minutes... at the buzzer.
The race consisted of quite a bit of route finding and we did pretty well with that. One of our team members was especially good with a map and compass. The biking section consisted of an even mix of road and trail. We ran several miles of singletrack and a few miles of old fire roads. We had a challenge part of the way through the race and had to retrieve an object from a small pond. This was difficult but do-able.
We then had to find our way up a canyon and follow a riverbed. The river was strewn with boulders and dry in places, but running in others. The woman on our team stepped right next to a copperhead and it coiled up and hissed. I saw it and had to re-direct my route and the team behind me and we climbed a section of riverbank further down.
The landscape was beautiful. Suspended bridges over gorges with huge hemlock trees sprouting from the huge boulders. There were waterfalls that spilled off cliffs. One of these was our rappel. We rappelled from around 80 feet off a waterfall and into a slow moving river. Then swam over to the bank and scrambled up a steep embankment to a road. Then we ran a mile or so to the finish line from there.
The disappointment came when we arrived at the complimentary pasta dinner and everything had been eaten. We complained but weren't offered anything. Just told that the nearest restaurant was 45 minutes away. The race was fairly organized and in a beautiful setting. But to work your butt off for 12 hours and not even get to eat at the end, we were pretty mad.
