BSF-Slave Falls and Twin Arches
October 2006
KY
posted by abenson
We tried to hit the trails at peak season and we weren't off by much. A couple of us had been to the Big South Fork before so we wanted to do something none of us had been on. When we told the ranger our destination we learned that Beavers had that section of the trail (Laurel Fork Creek between Slave Falls and Bandy Creek)under 2 -3 foot of water. So we ended up parking at the Middle Creek trailhead and hiking on the Middle Creek Loop to the Needle Arch area. It was getting dark so we started looking around for a campsite and found a sweet little site that hadn't been used in at least a season. The next day our mission was to get to the Twin Arches Loop via Slave Falls and complete the Loop. Since we were parked at Middle Creek, someone had the idea of leaving our gear at the somewhat secluded campsite and light hike the loop and return to the same campsite. After debating this for a little while we decided it was a good idea since we kind of wanted to be out of the trail at a decent time on Sunday.
The next day was awesome. I highly recommend the Twin Arches Loop. It is not a difficult trail, but a highly rewarding one with cliffs, hemlocks, and views. We made it back to our undisturbed site by 4:00 and settled in with a big campfire and some delish dehydrated dinner. The next morning we sped out b/c my dog was sick at home and I couldn't get it out of my mind. It is also nice to have a couple of hours on the couch before heading back to work the next day. Next time I plan on hitting Honey Creek Loop, who's up?
