Mt. Sherman

June 2009
Leadville , CO
posted by abenson

Mt. Sherman, a 14er outside of Leadville, CO is often referred to as a good first 14er. A few of us decided to go hang out in Leadville last June and bag a couple of these nearby 14ers and see what else we could get into while in the area.

Due to the relative ease of Mt. Sherman, there are quite a few trip reports out there, so I will save you the usual facts (history of the mountain, who it was named after, etc.) I will tell you that it is still owned by a mining company and the remnants are visible on the road up to the trail head.

Three out of the five of us had never climbed a 14er, so this mountain was a great choice. I remember starting out on a nice rock and dirt trail at the bottom that quickly changed to a rocky trail. There was a little snow on the bottom half of the trail that stayed in the shade, but the trail was mostly clear.

A couple of trail runners passed us about 1/3 of the way up, but we had the mountain to ourselves most of the day.

I was curious to see how I would handle the elevation on this trip. After we got up to approximately 12,000 I realized that my head was not taking it well at all. You know that kind of hangover that makes you grumpy, even though your stomach isn't upset? That is the way I felt all the way to the summit and then back down into town. I felt that way until I had a big Mexican dinner later that day.

Even though my head was pounding, the summit was a memorable experience. The weather was great, good company, and another funfilled guys trip well under way. We took a few photos and took off at a quick pace. When we got back to the car we were relieved to see that the marmots had spared our car. A local there told us that they sometimes eat wires under the hood, and we noticed a lot of them scattered around the parking lot. Defintely worth seeing if you are in the area.
