Somewhere in South Korea

August 2006
outside of Seoul
posted by abenson

This is a very dated trip report, but I recently scanned in some old photos and it brought back some good memories. I spent a year in South Korea back in 1994. I think it took about 4 months of drinking every weekend for us to realize we might not be back anytime soon, so we should see some of the country. I met a couple of guys over there in my platoon that loved the outdoors and we decided to teach ourselves how to rapel. We were kind of ticked because we were getting passed up on rope training, so we read up and also asked some other guys who had training. We started out by picking a few smaller hills with rocky outcrops to start on. We had plenty to choose from since Korea is about 70% mountains. After a couple of months we got brave, too brave. Once, I went down a rope without checking the bottom and about half way down realized I had to climg back up. Man, that was the most scared I have ever been. I tied the biggest knot under me you have ever seen! I am not sure what mountain range it was, but by the maps it looks like it is Taebaek (sp?). Needless to say, next time rope training came around, our platoon sergeant hooked us up because he thought we were going to kill ourselves. They even followed us out one time to watch. The best part was getting to the mountains. We would jump into a cab with all of our gear and point to the mountain. Usually the driver would instantly know we were looking for a trailhead. While we were over there we did our fair share of trail running, hiking, and even bought el cheapo mountain bikes to ride to the closer outcrops. If anyone ever tells you that Korea is worth seeing, they are right. Problem is, the parks system is basically in an infant stage, so you don't hear much about it. Good times.
