Daniel Boone National Forest

October 2006
near Whitley City , KY
posted by charlie

We took a trip to the Daniel Boone National Forest and Big South Fork a couple of weekends ago. The main purpose of this trip was to just get outdoors for an extended period with an emphasis on hanging out.
I have been on several trips where we hike in wearing heavy back packs and set up camp and then hike more. I love it but it is hard work! This trip was mainly for just hanging out in a beautiful place and enjoying the fall foliage and to kind of "break in" a couple of novice campers.
We camped in a place called Great Meadow which is in the DBNF and very close to BSF. From our camp we were able to drive around and see several overlooks into the BSF valley. We didn't do very much hiking at all this trip which was actually very nice and relaxing. good trip.

Great Meadows is a cool place for sure. The stream that runs through there and parallel to the road offers some great rainbow trout and smallmouth bass fishing.
Be sure to buy a trout stamp though.

I love that place. Let's plan a trip there for this Summer. Maybe even a paddling trip if we pick some milder whitewater/flatwater.
