Bourbon City Challenge

September 2008
Bardstown , KY
posted by buffalomatt

It was a race, but it sure was a trip. I knew things were going to be pretty hairy when I was blown over while carrying my boat down to the transition area. The Bourbon City Challenge is a race consisting of running, paddling, and cycling.

The run starts at Nelson County airport heading east on the tarmac then turns and runs forever to the other end of the tarmac. We then left the airport and began running trails. The trails vary from quad track to super technical single track. Eventually the trail ends and the orienteering begins. My Buffalo Creek Crashers team ran very well. I led, along with Addison Wheatley and Bradley Medley. Once in the woods, I let the young guns take over the pacemaking. My legs were suffering - probably due to the 5k I raced on Saturday (and the ubsurdly late night). We got to boats and Addison handed off to his teammates, while Bradley and I continued solo.

The paddle was brutal. The wind caused whitecaps and would move you backwards if you weren't stroking your butt off. We finally reached the far end of the lake and hopped out to begin the navigational portion. Bradley and I had been joined by Thad Hardin and the eventual runner up Jeremiah. We goofed big time - misread the sign and took off for the back of the cove - we were supposed to be looking for a point at the mouth of the cove. We were running the shoreline, swimming aroung trees, and finally decided that it couldn't be right. Ran back, paddled back and found most the field in front of us. By the end of the paddle we had made it all back. Jerimiah led me by a minute, I had thirty seconds on Bradley (who was teamed up with my friend Brian Bauman).

We had to run to the bike transition. I made most of the gap up there as Jeremiah took a lot of time switching over (first adventure race). I caught and passed him of the first of many short climbs. I was in the lead for soloist, but Brian was in front of me b/c he was already on his bike while we were changing shoes. Then, I see him turn the wrong way on the course. I went up that road and hollered my lungs out. There was no way he could hear me over the gale. I continued on the right course and eventually caught and passed four people who should have been behind me. Much sign misreading. It all worked out though, and the podium order was really unaffected.

Terrific day for the Buffalo Creek Crashers. We won men's solo, women's solo (Amanda Tucker), and team relay (Bradley Medley and Brian Bauman). It was a great race put on by Bob White and Mike Hammons. Congrats to all of those who raced and thanks to all those who made it a great race.
