Canoeing on Barren River

June 2008
Bowling Green , KY
posted by daybeed

I have to admit that the biggest adventure here was getting this giant boat on our compact car.

Even though the guys at the Preston rental center at WKU make you sign a waver saying they're not responsible if anything goes wrong, he told me, "i wouldn't chance it on that car."

Still, after giving up on tying the trucker's hitch knot and going for some of those newfangled crank straps, everything went smooth as silk.

As for the river itself, it's dirty and lazy and quiet. We paddled for about an hour and a half and saw maybe 3 boats, no bridges, and maybe two houses. I definitely felt like i was in the middle of nowhere even though I was practically in the middle of town, which was nice.

As you can see from the pictures, we took everything but the kitchen sink for our short little trip. i couldn't figure out how to unhook it from the pipes.

You guys need to hit Drakes Creek, that's the good stuff round here. Lots of cool spots there. I'll show ya round out there sometime.
