Firecracker 50
July 2008
Breckenridge , CO

Living in Colorado it's amazing how many great races one can participate in. You coule literally race your bike every weekend of the year if you were so inclined. With that many choices it's hard to choose which to go to.
After hearing for years what a great event the Firecracker was, I decided this year to give it a shot.
This race always draws an awesome field, and with it being this years Marathon National Championships, the pro field was like a "who's who" in XC racers.
The course is a demanding mix of terrain with 5,400 verticle feet of climbing per lap. Keep in mind most of the course is above 10,000 feet and goes above 12,000 long enough to hurt even the strongest lungs. working hard at that altitude can play tricks on your mind. I swear at the top of the greuling climb in the middle I saw some smurfs dancing with a unicorn and my bike was talking to me about classical composers and the pitfalls of artifical turf in sport.
The best thing about this race is how well it is run. An amazing staff and volunteers kept things running smooth from registration to the post-race party. The feed zones were well stocked with hydration and food... volunteers were practically competing to get you a fresh bottle.
With dozens of categories and a team option for those not up the the 50 mile challenge, this is a great race for anyone that really wants a challenge.
Pictures to come!
