A Paddle down Trout Creek
April 2008
Sussex , NB
posted by Fundyguy25
I needed to do some watershed assessment and so I thought the best way to do this was via kayak down the spring freshets of the normally low flowing Trout Creek. The group I work for has some project money we need spend here and it is my job to determine where best to put that money. I arranged for a collegue to meet me with two touring kayaks and away we went.
I am a novice at river kayaking as I tend to do more sea kayaking. It showed to as I had some troubles navigating around some downed trees and ended up taking a swim in the 7*C water. Chillllillly! But despite this upset I really enjoyed the quick three hour paddle that we did from Sussex Corner down to the Kennebecasis River and to the Wal-Mart parking lot.
Spring freshets make even the Trout Creek a great paddling destination and we could have gone farther up the system to start and continued a long way down. The put in areas are numerous as are the take outs so access is great. The scenery on this river is rural and urban sprawl with idyllic farm scenes being the norm. Fishing is respectable as well with a healthy Brook Trout population.
For a novice kayaker like me it was a great place to practice some river skills and I hope to do the trip more often in the future. Hopefully without the unscheduled swim.
Cheers
