Amasa Back

April 2008
Moab , UT
posted by wkumtrider

We arrived in Moab late Friday evening, checked in the hotel and then cruised Main Street for a good place to eat and drink beer. While drinking we decided to hit Amasa back as our first trail on Saturday morning.
That morning we went to Poison Spider bike shop to pick up our rentals. This shop is THE place to deal with in Moab. The staff was super nice and took great care of us for the first two days. We opted for three high end bikes: A Yeti 575, an Intense 5.5, and a Pivot (can't remember model name). We rode about 5 miles to the trail head, which wasn't a bad ride. Once there, we had to maneuver around some Jeeps at the start of the trail. This part of the trail was really technical and some of the jeeps were having a difficult time getting down some rocks.
Amasa Back is about 7-8 miles out and back, with lots of rocks and slick rock. Its all up hill for about 4 miles. The trail is technical, but very rideable. There was probably one or two spots we had to dismount.
Once we reached the top, we took a break and admired the view. Then it was time for the fun part: riding it down for 4 miles. This is where the Intense 5.5 really shined. It soaked up all the rocks and drops quite nicely, even better than the Yeti, in our opinion. It felt like it took us 10 minutes to get to the bottom. We had to stop once to let a group of Jeeps pass, but other than that we bombed it all the way down. Lots of drops, slickrock and loose rock and dirt made some areas a little tricky on the way down, but our bikes and skills (ha) made the job easy. We ran into a guy we knew from Louisville. He was on his way up with a group of people.
At the end we had to ride 5 miles back into town, but we didn't mind. We were stoked from the ride down Amasa back.

We plan on coming back next year. We'll need to find the local secret trails next time.

Your trip report reminded me of what I was missing, so I had to go down this weekend. Perfect weather. Come back!

ALl the pictures you sent me abenson will not work. They are in the wrong format. Must be that disposable camera.

Sounds like you need to do a review of that Intense 5.5. Sweet looking bike!

And by the way, that picture looks like my Uncle Owen's moisture farm back on Tatooine.
