Porcupine Rim, Moab

April 2008
Moab , UT
posted by abenson

Porcupine Rim, just outside of Moab, is almost as much of a rite of passage as the well known Slickrock Trail. It is often voted "favorite trail" among Moab visitors and now I can see why.

I was testing/renting a Yeti 575 on the day we rode the Rim and the 5" travel, beefy bike was a perfect match for the trail.

It is possible to ride from town to the trailhead, but since we were already logged a bunch of miles the day before we opted for the shuttle up. This trail started out with about a 4 mile climb, but it really wasn't that bad. It had a few really tough spots and we rested a couple of times, but it wasn't as bad as it sounds. At one point, before descending, the ground beside the trail had snow on the ground.

Then, out of nowhere we found ourselves flying down rocky doubletrack. It was close to this point, about 5 miles in, when we saw the famous panoramic spot that everyone seems to have a photo of and we stopped there for what else, photos!

The next several miles were mostly all downhill rocky, sandy, doubletrack. With about two miles to go, the trail changed to some of the sweetest singletrack I have ever been exposed to. The trail followed a canyon that was a tributary to the Colorado River before it led us right next to the River. This trail was technical, which made for an interesting clipped in ride. I kept finding myself looking at the scenery and then reminding myself not to look away for too long because of the ledge we were riding on. I wish I had more photos, but it was impossible to interfere with the amazing flow and speed of the trail. The trail ends down on the road next to the river. You can leave a car there for a shuttle or ride about five miles back into town.

So does that Yeti make you wanna get a new bike?

I love that pick of the shuttle with all the bikes on it. A scene like that lets you know something fun is in store!
