Nantahala River
October 2006
Nantahala Village , NC
posted by Wade
We used Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) for this trip down the Nantahala. One of the members of our group, abenson, had done this river before in a duck inflatable kayak.
The river is sometimes called "everyones whitewater river" becasue it can be enjoyed by a wide range of people. It has several sections of class II rapids and one section of class III at the end of the run, just before reaching the NOC campus.
I switched off guiding the raft with abenson and wkumtrider on this trip. We all got the hang of it after a few minutes. It took some power to turn the boat, but if you could get your call outs loud enough to the your crew, then they could turn the boat for you with their strokes. They were an excellent crew, and really put some muscle behind their strokes. It was very fun guiding the raft, and I would definately reccomend it to anyone who hits the Nanthala. This is a great learning experience. Previous paddling experience is helpful, but not required.
The next time we run this we will try it in duckies and that will be a whole different experience.
The NOC campus is a great place to hang out after the trip too. Kudos to Will, the guide that lead the raft in front of us, he was a big help in scouting the rapids and letting us know how to approach each one. He would be an excellent guide to have in your raft for this river.
Tip your guides!
