Hunting Island

SC
posted by BrandonHill

I have to say I'm a bit suprised no one's listed this yet for the state of South Carolina page. Either way, here y'all go.

If any of you have ever visited the lowcountry of South Carolina coast, most will agree with exactly how enchanting the coast is. One area in particular is the Beaufort area. Beaufort in general is a beauty in itself, but for those who thirst for roughing it in the outdoors there is Hunting Island.

Located at the end of US Highway 21, it's a 5000+ acre state park that hopefully you'll fall in love with as I did long ago when I was a kid. I've been taking trips down there frequently my whole life.

The whole park has been maintained very conservatively in regards to the natural environment. No matter where you look, you will see the thick jungle or the beach.

On the south end of the island on the beach side are old cabins which are still rented; however, the weather and tides are taking their toll on the island as many of the older cabins have since washed off into the ocean from storms. The campground is seperate from the actual park and is on the north end of the island with shower houses, a small grocery, and beach access. There are also sites for RV camping and tent sites.

It's a wonderful place to kayak with the large lagoon, historic lighthouse, hiking trails, beach, fishing, alligators, deer, rabbit, logger head turtles; however you look at it, this is just too good of a place to pass up.

There's a few information centers on the island, and a nature center at the pier on the south end of the island.

Some other fun information for any movie goers is many films have used Hunting Island as a filming location: Rules of Engagement, Forrest Gump, US Marshalls, The Jungle Book(real version), and a few others I cannot think of at the moment. If you go to a nearby tavern on Harbor Island(island just before you cross Johnson's Creek onto Hunting Island) you'll see photos of actors Gary Sinese, Tom Hanks on the walls.

Anyways, I strongly encourage any of you to visit the place if you're ever traveling down this way. It's about 30-40 minutes from exit 33 off I-95 in SC, depending on traffic in downtown Beaufort.

Here's a link if y'all want any more info or history! HUNTING ISLAND, SC
