Peaks of Otter, Bedford, VA

December 2007

This was an awesome day hike my dad and I did together. The trail to the top is a mile and a half. The information sign at the trail head says it should take an hour and a half to reach the top, we did it in 30 minutes. (We weren't showing off, just didn't want to be behind the really slow people and little kids running a muck).

The picture of the sign (included) will tell you the rest. The hike was not strenuous, somewhat steep at points, but there are concrete and rock steps in the steep spots. Even handrails in sections near the top.

We went to the top of Sharp top, (its brother, Flat top, make up the peaks, otter creek, or is it river... runs nearby.)

After we made the peak, we came back down and went down a separate trail to Buzzard's Roost. Also cool. The view from Buzzard's Roost, back towards Sharp top is pretty wild.

If you go to this link,http://www.peaksofotter.com/ you can find a map to the location, to the lodge below (I'm not much on lodges, especially after reading Night of the Grizzlies, but if you want, go ahead) and other info about the area.

Awesome hike.

BTW, if yall have older folks with you, there is a paved golf cart trail that will take you damn near the top. Check it out, take your seniors!

Interesting note: Included is a picture of the sign at the summit, (which may be hard to read) but what it says is this: "Sharp Top Mountain, elevation 3875. Sharp top, famous observation point, was once thought to be Virginia's highest peak. From it came the Virginia stone in the Washington Monument which is inscribed, 'From Otter's summit, Virginia's loftiest peak, to crown a monument to Virginia's noblest son.'"

  Nice report,I love that area.
Not sure if you know that there is a B-25B Mitchell Bomber that crashed into the side of the mountain back in 1941(not much left of it but its still there)here is a link to some pictures.

the site is not easy to find but if you have a GPS unit this will help.
