Raccoon Mountain MTB Trail
December 2007
Chattanooga , TN
posted by JmacTN
I recently took a trip with Mike and Bart down to Chattanooga to check out this trail that I have heard so much about. Lets just say it was worth the trip.
Bart and I have never been to Raccoon Mt before, but Mike has, so we let him be our guide. However, it has been a while since Mike has been and he couldn't quite remember which direction to go. Since the trail is a loop, it didn't really matter, but there is always a prefered direction. We decided to go clockwise.
This direction started us on a long and fast downhill section with some sweet jumps. However, since the trail was covered with leaves, it made for some hairy moments going around turns and jumps at speed. It was a little slippery.
After about a mile or so into the trail, Mike realized that we should have went the other direction. Since we were already committed, we decided to keep going in the same direction. After talking to some locals we met on the trail, they said the trail is ridden in both directions, but most people prefer to go counter clockwise. After riding a few more miles we found out why. We found ourselves climbing up some sections that would be killer going down, including a section with lots of berms and jumps. Don't let me fool you though. Going clockwise was still awesome.
After everything was said and done, we rode 17.3 miles and had an elevation change of 4300'. This trail has it all: Plenty of climbing, fast down hills, sweet jumps, technical sections, fast and flowy single track and a short part on a service road. I would consider this an "epic" trail. And since it is only 2 hours from me, I will defenitly be back.
