Tye river-Rockfish Gap AT
June 2006
Waynesboro, Nelson , VA
posted by ArcticTough
Hiked 30-35 (the topo printout we used was not accurate to trail, trail seems to have been changed over the years) miles in 2 days. First day was a lot of work, lot of steep uphill work. Sticking to 50 minutes walking, 10-15 minutes rest worked well for us though. Awesome views. First day had great views of Torry Ridge and the Shenandoah Valley to the east. Camped a few hundred meters below humpback rock and slept very well besides the doe and two fawns who were upset we were in their sleeping spot and about stomped me to death. Pretty funny now actually.
Second day had great views of Wintergreen ski resort. Second day's trail looked a lot like the scene from Last of the Mohicans where Uncas and Hawkeye are chasing the Monroe girls. (One of my favorite movies, so I was pretty pumped to be walking along it.) I recommend this section.
Good scenery, and even though it was a weekend in June, we rarely saw people on the trail. Maybe 4-7 people total. Definitely take a good camera, I regret not having one and having to take a disposable. (I have since bought a good one). I'd also do it in maybe 3 days, we hauled ass through it for some reason. Two deeply competitive people as hiking partners doesn't always work.
You can get a much better map at Blue Ridge Mountain Sports, map number 12, sections 15 and 16 of the AT. Made by the Potomac AT club. This map is much more accurate than the topo printout we used, and subsequently cursed cartographers the entire way because of it.
Enjoy!
