C&O Canal Trail and Great Falls, MD
November 2007
Potomac , MD
posted by pamela
I went for a walk along the C&O Canal this weekend. I started a couple miles south of Great Falls and went north to the overlook area, which was quite impressive. There was a small crowd of tourists, and a group of Chinese were about to start a painting class on the overlook platform. The view was great and the weather was perfect. The towpath is well taken care of, as it should be because of the heavy use it gets all year around. Being so close to DC, this is what you could expect. On the way back to where my car was parked I took the higher trail which used to be a road. It was more wooded but it still ran alongside the canal. Autumn colors were in full effect and it was beautiful! This trail runs all the way from DC to Cumberland, which is about 180 miles I think. It is often used by hikers, runners, and bikers. There are campsites scattered throughout the area, and there are many locations you can stop to get food, water, etc. This area is often frequented by canoeists who are brave enough to go down the Potomac. I would never do it! The best thing about this place is the sense of serenity you get, but in fact, you are just a few miles from DC.
