Lion Dancing - Maui Style
January 2007
Maui , HI
posted by Jack
Every year, I go to Hawaii, to Lion Dance with my Kung-Fu Instructor in Hawaii. We start out on my teacher's home island of Oahu. By the time I arrive, they are already in full swing and we do a couple of performances in Chinatown including the Chinese Cultural Plaza and the Chinatown parade. These two venues during Chinese New Year are packed with martial arts demonstrations and lion dances from the various schools around Oahu.
Then it's on to the island of Maui where our group (approx. 20-30) and we begin 7 days of lion dancing all day long. We travel all over the island from Kihei to Kaanapali and then upcountry to Makawao. There's a great dormant volcano that I have yet to visit called Haleakala which, they say is awesome to be on top of while the sun rises and they offer biking trips down the volcano.
This year, we took a day trip over to the small island of Moloka'i which has a small population of around 2,000. It is the site of the old Dole Plantations, however, pineapples are no longer grown on the island. The island is home to a couple of 4-star resort hotels and has a beautiful small-town square area of shops and local eateries. This island reminds me of the country because of the rolling hills and large Pine-like trees on the island. One of the locals had told me that when the island was being visited by foreigners, they began planting these large trees on the island so that they could use the long large trunks to use as masts for their ships. At the end of the day, we traveled back to Maui via a one-hour boat ride across the channel during sunset which was nothing short of amazing and breathtaking.
Traveling to Hawaii is always fun and being there for something related to martial arts makes it that much better. The scenery, the aloha from the people make a trip to Hawaii during Chinese New Year NO KA OI!
If you're in to martial arts, chances are, you'll find something you'll love in Hawaii. It's a hotbed of martial arts and there is tons of diversity in the styles that are offered.
