Bourbon Festival Adventure Race

September 2007
Bardstown , KY
posted by abenson

I decided to give the first annual Bardstown Adventure Race a try. I figured it would be fun and a good warm up for the Jailbreak. Since it started at the airport, the first two miles of the run were on a tarmac. It then headed onto a gravel road and then a double track trail in the woods. Since it had been raining off and on some the parts of the trail in the open were so muddy we were forced to slow down. I was somewhere in the top ten going into the trail. Then the trail became what looked like a deer trail. I lost the leaders, but myself and two other guys started working together to stay on course. The trail run was a blast, and it shot out on the bank of a lake. A couple hundred yards down the bank the boats were staged and ready to go. This is also really close to where the bikes were staged. After pushing the boat in and getting started, I realized how tough it was going to be to stay in the top ten with a rental recreation kayak, but I managed to stay up there with everyone. After approximately 2.5 miles of paddling, we hit the beach for another 1/4 mile run to the bike staging area. I changed shoes, put on my bike gear, ate a gue, and headed out on the bike course. The bike course was only 8 miles, so I didn't hold anything back. I started to feel really good and passed quite a few people on the road, so I then thought maybe a top ten was possible after all. There was hardly any car traffic on the road, which made it nice. Soon, I saw the airport and the finish and there was another guy in front of me. I hammered down and beat him at the line only to find out he was on a relay. Then I found out almost everyone in front of me were on relays. I am actually glad that I didn't know that because it forced to me push myself harder on every event and it payed off. Second place overall men's solo out of twenty-five. They gave out medals to the top three and tons of freebies. I recommend this race to anyone wanting to get into this type of racing, I'll be back next year.

Did you see the recap show on TV this weekend? I was amazed by the 1 minute 40 second coverage of the race. Seriously, great job.

no checkpoints, I guess it was more of a mini tri.

Sounds more like a triathlon than an adventure race. Did you have to find checkpoints?

That's cool man. You shaould be able to kick some arse at Jailbreak. I have been going down to Chickasaw as much as I can to ride and run the trail. We should be in good shape.

SWEET. You deserve the win, I know you've been training hard. You are gonna rock the Jailbreak Tri... which reminds me, maybe I should start training since I'm gonna have to run in a few weeks. I'll start walking tomorrow, yeah... ;)
