Bad Luck on Labor Day Weekend at LBL
Well it wasn't all bad. A group of us went to spend Labor Day weekend at Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky. It has some awesome cross country mtb riding. A 14.2 mile loop called the Canal Loop. This is the 4th year Elizabeth and I have gone over to ride it and the 3rd year this group has gone. We camp at Hillman's Ferry Campground and ride a few miles on the paved path to the North Welcome Center to start the trail.
On the way to the Welcome Center JmacTN had an issue with is brakes. After he and his bro WKUmtrider fixed that we went on. Once on the canal loop we were about 1/2 mile or so in to the ride and a stick got caught in my spokes. POP! My derailer hanger broke off. I ride a Marin and the local bike shop, Wood N Wave, doesn't carry Marin so I was out of luck. The twins got me fixed up to ride my bike as a single speed....(the Bike Doctors)... this is Elizabeth's idea for a new reality show, twins who go out to the trails and make trail repairs for broken down mountain bikers.... maybe maybe.... I'll call Aaron Spelling and see if he's interested.
But the single speed thing didn't work out, the chain kept popping off. I tied my derailer to the frame, then slowly rode back.
Elizabeth and I ran some of the North - South Trail and that was a good work out, but we were bummed about not getting to ride. We made up for it at the Iron Kettle that night. It's become tradition on this trip to hit this "western saloon" looking buffet restaurant every year after a good ride. Nothing like some fried chicken and mashed taters to get you ready to go make a fire and crash. It's always cool to go out with the twins too... "Are you guys twins?" people say..... "No, I don't even know this guy" they like to say...
It was a fun trip, and we salvaged it by trail running, swimming, chilling in the hammock, and then hitting the buffet again the next night
The only thing was, we missed Mel who had gone with us the other years. She usually is the firebug of the group and makes sure we all get our eyebrows singed from a roaring fire.
Oh well, good times.
