White Water River Rafting the Wennatchee River
June 2007
Seattle , WA
posted by jazzlurman
2 trips two different days. My buddy Harper and I decided to leave on 6/22 and head up to Index for a little bit of hiking and to scout a possible hike and camp up in Index. We wanted to scout the what some say is a very difficult hike. Blanca Lake has been a spot we never hit up in a place where we do alot of camping and fishing. Unfotunatley we got there and found the Index forest road blocked by the forest service at Trout Creek, with large boulder and sand. No access around was evident and it was too dark to go in from the back side. By this time it was about 2100 and we drove up Steven's towards Leavonworth.
Never found a spot to go in and camp except for the cheesy pay and road camp by a large RV. We continued to truck on, and got to Leavonworth about 0030. Thought it was too late to call our river guide friend so late thinking he had a group to take in the morning early. Every hotel was booked due to the International Accordian festival, and regional baseball taking place that weekend in town, so we drove out of town near the little rocky field and crashed in the car exhausted. Little did we know that we had parked about 150 feet from the train tracks which the train comes by about every hour. After finally deciding to just get up at about 0500 we went in for some pancakes at one of the little houses in town.
Now our trip was somewhat planned for the 24th (sunday) and today was saturday. With the hiking and scouting ruined, we decided to call the rafting company to see if we could book a trip with our dear friend Kyle. the owner said sure no problem. Little did we know Kyle was up pretty late and having a great time, with out an excursion that next morning. So when we showed up to a somewhat red eyed sleepy looking short dude with blonde bed head, we knew the story(sorry man), but we did get him a full commercial trip since more strangers showed up. Kyle though was in full smiles about an hour later and was excited to take us down a day early also.
I can't rave enough about this man. He knows that river, and never puts you in any extreme danger (unless you ask... just kidding).
The company he works for is River Riders, which can be found on the internet at www.riverrider.com. From all my other guide friends, they claim this company to have the stricktest training and sign off on any river they do. So you know you will get a well qualified guide. Not knocking the other companies either though. Most are unbelievable and great people. Gotta love Blue Sky, Brad is an awsome and host.
Might be some biased to River Riders a little due to that we had the VIP treatment with River Riders. We not only went 2 days, but camped with the guides and shared stories. Now for most guides, they stay to their kind and never let most consumers or outsiders in the circle, heck newbies have it hard even gitting in to that inner circle of trust and friendship. This crew welcomed us and the rest of my crew that Saturday night when the rest showed up, like we were family for years.
River Riders does 2 runs a day one in the morn and one in the after noon. Payment comes with wetsuit, jacket, training, guide, and an awsome meal cooked with love when your done. No drinking in advance or a no go will be incurred by the individual, and is a bad fau pau when dealing with the elements. $60
