Mount Whitney Solo Day Climb

June 2007
Lone, Pine , CA
posted by Nomad75

I camped out the night before to help me acclimate at the Whitney Portal campgrounds that I had reserved several months earlier. I set up camp around 7:00 P.M. then boiled some water for my wild blueberry tea to help me stay hydrated. After I finshed my tea I took a walk to ensure I knew where the trailhead was when I woke up the next morning in the dark. Once I made it back to camp I settled in to try to get some sleep. I think I finaly dozed off around 11:00. I was having trouble sleeping because it was so warm and the thought of bears eating me.
The next morning I awoke to the sound of my watch alarm beeping in my ear at 2:00 A.M.
I got out of the tent, ate breakfast and quickly took down camp and packed it into my car making sure that there was nothing left that would attract bears.
I made it to the hiker parking area and started out on the trail following the beam of my headlamp by 3:00 A.M. I start to get a good pace going and about an hour into the climb I pass my first group of climbers. I continue up the trail looking at my map every so often to check my progress and to help keep me motivated to reach my goal of the summit by noon. As I hike trough outpost camp I notice only a few campers that have started to emerge from their tents. This makes me feel great because I have made it this far starting from the trail head and they have not even started on the trail.

To be continued.

Congrats on reaching the summit! I look forward to hearing the rest of the trip and seeing your pictures.

I heard you had to sprint a lot of the way down to keep the wife from worrying about you running too late.

Well done, man.
