Drakes Creek Canoe Float July 2006
July 2006
Bowling Green , KY
posted by Wade
Drakes Creek is a tributary of the Barren River, which is a tributary of the Green River, which is a tributary of the Ohio... and so forth.
It is a smooth flatwater float with one rapid near Middle Bridge Road.
The Drakes Creek has several put-ins and take-outs. Some are private, and some are public. The public put-ins and take outs are the Romanza Johnson Park (actually on the Trammel Creek, but flows into Drakes soon after), the Phil Moore Park or Twin Bridges on Scottsville Rd., and possibly the bridge on Old Scottsville road. The last put-in/take out mentioned is extremely difficult to access without crossing private property. So, unless you know the land owner, float past that spot and take out at Weldon Peete park close to downtown Bowling Green.
This float is a great trip for family and friends. It's a good creek to kick back and enjoy the sand/gravel bars. Most of the trips take at least 4 hours, so be prepared to pack a lunch. Also, be very respectful of the property owners on the banks so we can preserve the balance between boater and landowner.
We put in at the old Scottsville Road brige. There is a steep embankment going down to the river on river-right. My cooler got away from me going down the hill and the contents spilled. All is good on the river though. (see pic for reference)
The rapids are not difficult on this river, and are a solid clas II, but they only exist in one spot, and can occasionally pop up where there are some log strainers. The rapid has an eddy pool after it, so don't try to turn too quickly after running it or you'll flip your boat. CAUTION - people have drowned in this area. Wear your lifejacket here, and know how to swim!
The river can get a little unruley, as any river can, after a huge rain or flood. So, never run the river after a big rain, always wait a few days.
With all that said, this river is awesome, and this trip was great. We had family and friends along. One of the guys caught a very small, smallmouth bass. A few cold uns, with friends and family is a great way to spend a Saturday.
