Paddlin' Skilak
June 2007
Kenai , AK
posted by Treadwell
What was supposed to be a rainy day turned into a heaven on earth....
Skilak Lake was so perfectly still that it was as paddling through the cloudless sky. Calm, serenaded by the birds, easy-going laid-back down right chill...and any day you get 84 degrees on the water in Alaska is just a bonus.
We spent the evening fishing from the shore. And finished out the night with a roaring campfire, still going to bed at midnight before the sun went down. The morning broke clear and chilly, but warmed up quickly with the rising sun. The lake like glass, it was hard to tell up from down and we liked it that way. Time slipped away from us and we got back hours after we were supposed to be out of the campsite... it's been a while since we actually paid to camp and had to think about something like that.
But it was worth seeing the fresh greens of spring bursting from the mountainsides lining the lake.... last year we were there before the real spring thaw and only saw the remains of the 2003 fire destroying 5200 acres. This year it felt like all had been made whole again and we blissfully glided by admiring 360 degree glory.
