Dupont State Park
June 2007
Cedar Mountain , NC
posted by abenson
A recent trip to Dupont State Park was just what I needed to remind me why I love mountain biking. This fairly small state park is situated south of Pisgah National Forest. It is so small and relatively new that you might have a hard time finding directions, but there is a good website that we used for trail descriptions, trailheads, etc.
We didn't even know if we were going to hit Dupont because we were staying at Pisgah, but due to some recent rainfall in the area, we decided to try it out. Dupont is well known for super fast drying trails because a big part of it is actually slickrock. Yep, slickrock in North Carolina, what will Moab think about that?
We decided to ride the most popular trails according to the website. The trails are relatively small loops with connector trails so many options are available to suit your speed. It was definitely a shock to my tires to climb up rocks and bomb back down them. I was really surprised on how much traction I had compared to dirt trails. Anyway, the route we took goes something like this; parked in the Coal Mill Shoals parking lot, crossed the road into access trail, went up Big Rock trail, at the top we turned left and went down Cedar Rock, rode connector Little River? to Burnt Mountain, rode connector across really slick creek crossing(attempting to get back to Cedar, but map was wrong), rode with locals back to Cedar, climbed back up the same trail we bombed earlier, then bombed Big Rock back down.
I have heard there are similar loops out there at different trailheads, so I would like to try those out next time. I would definitely like to go back soon.
