Jailbreak Triathlon

September 2006
Columbia , TN
posted by Wade

This was a great Triathlon. Well put together, and well run. I finished in the back of the pack on this race, but this was my first tri, and it was all about finishing for me.
My partner was amazing. She finished just ten minutes behind me and she was passing several male racers on the trail.
The Chickasaw Trace County Park in Maury county was a beautiful setting for the race. I had never been, so the course was entirely new to me. The canoe portion was on the Duck River and was easy flatwater. We did very well on the canoe portion, catching up with the heat that started 5 minutes ahead of us.
The second leg was the Mountain Bike section, and this was much more challenging than I expected. I made several critical mistakes that cost me some time on this section. I dismounted 2-3 times for hills, my shoelace caught and broke in my spokes causing me to stop (I know, I should go to clipless...), and I ran off the trail once on a sharp drop and had a hard time getting back into the pack.
The last leg was the 2.5 mile trail run. This section was easy. The hills were slow and not to difficult to climb, and the trail was relatively free of obstacles like roots and rocks. I didn't break any records on this portion either, but I cruised at a comfortable speed and passed some people who had to stop and walk.
Ultimately we finished, and can chalk this up as another thing we've tried. I might even do another one. I highly recommend this one.
