Florida Everglades

March 2007

For anyone who is up for a pretty intense paddle through the ocean surrounded by amazing wildlife this place is a must see!! The first night I arrived we stayed at the Florida everglades hostel which was, for any hippy's out there, a dream come true. They provided us with canoes, paddles and lifejackets. You may want to rent canoe's down there because you need a pretty heavy one to make the trip. Since your on the ocean you need to carry about 10 liters of water per person per day so the canoe will be packed.

Basically the entire trip was an experience I will never forget. During the day we paddled between 5-7 hours a day. Along the way Dolphins were jumping and bumping into our boats. We saw Manatees, pelicans, sting rays, sharks, and alligators for the entire ride. The ocean happened to be so calm that we were able to go about an hour from shore and it pretty much felt we were paddling in the middle of the ocean.

The first 2 days we were along the coast of the glades so we stayed on beaches at night. The last 2 days we were in the glades and had to sleep on Chickees at night which was awesome platforms in the water. Once you’re in the glades you’re basically surrounded by mangroves, so if you need a washroom break during the day it makes for a very interesting one since you have to climb through a jungle gym of mangroves.

All in the entire trip was amazing. We ended it off back at the hostel where one of the guys that worked there took us to a drum circle on Miami Beach. Perfect ending to a great trip!!

This trip sounds fantastic. I would love to go on this trip. Can you send out the details of the trip? I am really interested in doing something like this, but never have a clue how to plan it...

They were two 10' x 12' wooden platforms with a narrow walkway in between. We fit an 8 person tent on one of the platforms but thats probably the maximum. I attempted to upload a picture of it but it doesn't seem to work, i'll keep trying
