German Ridge - Hoosier National Forest
Tell City , IN
posted by Wade
Went up to Tell City, Indiana a few weeks ago and hiked the German Ridge trail, or at least some of it. There are over 20 miles of trails in this area of the Hoosier National Forest, and let me tell you there are some hills.
We started out hiking in from one of the central parking lots and hiked up and down steep terrain the whole time. We did a loop, which is easy to do in this area because the trail system basically consist of several loops. Follow this link to see a map http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/hoosier/recreation/german_ridge.htm
Or get one at the ranger station in Tell City, or at the trailhead. The maps at the trailhead have good mileage on them. There aren't really any established campsites, you just pick a spot in the backcountry or camp at the campgrounds.
We hiked about 7 miles and camped on the bank of a pond we found. It was a beautiful sunset over the pine and oak treetops. The only trouble we had was with the insects. One of our party members got his legs chewed up pretty good with deer ticks. We had to hike through a short patch of weeds to get to our campsite, so I'm sure that's where he got them. Defintately stay out of the high weeds in this area.
Also, watch out for horsepackers. They deserve to use the trail too, but the horses can be easily spooked and there is some thick underrush and it's easy to surprise a group of people riding horses.
We hiked about 3 miles on day 2 and scared up a big deer on the trail. It was nice to get out in the wilderness, and I got the feeling that there weren't too many people in the area that take advantage of this resource. Some, but not all of the trails are accessible to Mountain Bikes and Horses, check the maps and the ranger station, and keep an eye out for snakes, we were warned about copperheads.
