Nutrition Tips from a serious Ultra Runner

posted by wdew23 on November 16, 2007

From From Matt Hart's blog at http://coachingendurance.com/blog/blog.shtml

My personal tips (these are the tips i send my coaching clients in their first week):

drink lots of water. every time you eat drink two glasses of water to stay hydrated (oh yeah and drink nuun)

eat six small meals throughout the day (that means eating every 2-3hrs)

eat whole organic raw foods, not packaged products. if you can't imagine where it came from then it's probably created in a lab somewhere in new jersey and not something you want to consume

eat lean protein with each meal. it's important for rebuilding muscle and it makes you feel full... and generally has a low glycemic response - it also minimizes the catabolic effects of training.

eliminate hydrogenated oils and trans fats

eliminate refined sugar and processed carbs

the basis of your diet should be organic fruits and veggies, lean meats and complex carbs

Nature's One and Peperidge Farm breads don't have partially hydrogenated crap and no high fructose corn syrup. Also, Kashi cereal and oatmeal is good and pretty healthy. Buy Kashi at Wal-Mart or Target, they charge half what Kroger charges. It is hard to do and expensive, but should pay off.

I'm struggling with it myself. Eating better takes so much effort and it generally costs more. Any hints you have would be appreciated.

I have changed my diet recently and am hoping for a good outcome. I have pretty much eliminated hydrogenated or partically hydrogenated anything and enriched stuff. Organic foods taste much better too. I used to eat some crappy processed butter, but now eat real butter which they say is better for you because your body can actually process it. Anyways, keep your fingers crossed for me.
