Red River Gorge Trail Crew Outing! Dec 8th

posted by gonzobeer on November 27, 2007

(From Charlie Rowe)

"Hey Trail Crew,
Well, the leaves are finely coming off the trees; it has been a drysummer and a strange fall. There wasn’t really a strong week or two of bright fall color like most years but there has been an extra long period of darker hues. Our fire season will be over in a few weeks but rarely does anything happen past Thanksgiving weekend. We had some summer fires but done in the fall, very unusual. The December outing is coming up in just a couple weeks; I am looking forward to a good day in the woods with friends. Our goal for December is to complete the Sky Bridge steps and take down the Sky Crane. All that is left on the project is bolting the stair treads to the top set of stringers and hanging its handrails. For the most part this rough carpentry and should not be a problem in the cooler air. If the weather is really wet n’cold, blowing snow or something we will shift over to a trail clearing project.
Let’s meet in the Sky Bridge parking lot at 9:30 for this one, that is Saturday, December Eighth. We will sign in, brief and hopefully be onthe project around 10:00. If you arrive later than 10:00 please see aleader for a safety briefing before starting to work. If all goes well wewill be packed up and headed to camp by 3:30. This is a light to moderateduty project with less than a quarter mile walk. It is a construction project so participants must be at least fourteen years old to be on site and sixteen to use tools. It is helpful when folks bring along extra carpentry tools; pencils and tape rules are always in short supply. As usual when the evening rolls around we all head to camp for a delicious meal and fire side chat. Come join us, stay the night if you like. I also want to let everyone on this mailing list know that the RRGTC is in the process of ordering another round of T-Shirts. This time we aredoing long sleeve Henley’s and short sleeve crew necks. Please go to the Yahoo Message board and let Jon know how many of each and what sizes you would like. If you are not on the Yahoo Board, sign up, or you can let me know, but you better get your order in if you want in on the new round of RRGTC duds!. To get to the Sky Bridge Recreation Area; Take the Mountain ParkwayExit 40 and turn right on KY 15 north. Go about a half mile then turn right again on KY 715, at just over four and a half miles you will turn left into Sky Bridge Recreation Area.If you would like to be removed from this mailing just let me know.More information can be obtained at www.gorgecrew.com or join in theplanning and chat on the RRGTC message board at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rrgtc/messages.All Red River Gorge Trail Crew service outings are official US Forest Service approved projects.

Good idea WildeGeek. Maybe a "brief" on the bulletin board and the details on the calendar. This sounds like a great event. the Gorge is definitely a place that needs some love.

A better place to put this kind of message would be our calendar, rather than as a bulletin. Pleas put an abbreviated copy of your announcement there as well.
