This stuff is invaluable and has almost an infinite number of uses. I have seen a few stores trying to pass off cheaper ropes as parachute cord, so be sure you are buying the real thing. This stuff has a breaking strength of 550 lbs as-is, but if needed, it can be taken apart. Inside the nylon shell, there are seven braided strands that can be removed, so if need be, you can really have eight times the length of whatever you are packing. I carry around 50 ft. of the stuff on just about any kind of outdoors trip I take. It is commonly available in green and black, but if you search online, you can find a wide range of colors.

We used this stuff in the Marines and it was absolutely invaluable. Great stuff for a million and one uses.

Good point, Yeti. The cheaper stuff I've seen just has a bunch of fibers on the inside.

The key to knowing if you have the "real deal" when it comes to 550 cord is the strand count. The real stuff has seven strands, be sure and check because if in a pinch anything but the real stuff is just about worthless!!
