I notice when a lot of people show me their first aid kits, or I read a list of first aid kit contents many people have a suture/staple kit with them. The only problem with these is, unless you know how to use them appropriately they are completely useless and extra weight. A better solution is to have a really good method of bandaging and a really good way to stop the bleeding until it can be repaired by a qualified individual. The military has developed a method of stopping bleeding that is quite effective. Quick Clot is currently deployed with US forces world wide, as well as civillian EMS and police tactical medics. I have had a chance to use the prescription version of quick clot as a tactical medic, and let me tell you it does what it says it will do. It is made for a derivitive of volcanic rock and causes the blood to become hemo-concetrated to promote quick clotting a the wound area. The key is to remove as much excess blood from the area of the wound as possible and slowly pour the quick clot into the wound. A scab will form almost immediately. You can then bandage the wound as normal. The scab over the wound can easily be irrigated off for medical personnell to repair. If you don't remove the excess blood (or other liquid) from the area around the wound prior to applying the quick clot (or if you pour water onto quick clot that is just laying around on the area of the wound), when the quick clot hits it on the surface it can create an exothermic reaction and get very very hot. All in all this is a great product that doesn't pack a lot of weight and can really be a life saver. Cabelas has the option of either a 25 gram pack or a 50 gram pack and with or without anti-microbial silver in with the quick clot.

As much as I get cut, stabbed, or otherwise maimed, I should seriously invest in this company. I'll definitely have to keep an eye out for this product.

Wow I'd never heard of this stuff until now. Great review. Sounds like a must-have for the kit!
