I will admit my first fly rod was Bass Pro Shops combo that I purchased to learn to cast and fish the creeks near Bowling Green, KY. The rod and reel is a Hobbs Creek 7’ 6”, 4 weight, 2 piece. I still have that rod and reel today. In fact, it would probably be a great mountain rod for east Tennessee. After I moved to Tennessee and fished the Caney Fork for the first time, I realized I would need to upgrade to something new. I went to Cumberland Transit one Saturday morning and I came out of there with a Sage DS2 9’, 6 weight, 2 piece and an Orvis Battenkill Reel To this day, I am still a huge fan of Sage, in fact, out of the eleven fly rods that I own, seven are Sage. The same goes for reels too. I have been fishing Orvis reels for years. I started with the Battenkill, then the Bar Stock Battenkill, and finally the Mid Arbor. I have been fishing the Mid Arbors for a few years now. For some reason this year, I decided to shake things up, so I bought a Lamson Velocity Hard ALOX. This is a great reel. I have been fishing this reel for the last six months and it is great. The drag is smooth and easily adjustable. The mechanics / drag mechanism is completely sealed from the elements: dirt and water. I have been fishing the reel on a Sage VPS 6 weight rod and I have not been disappointed yet. I recently bought another Sage rod that was being discontinued: Sage SLT 4 weight. I like the reel so much for the 6 weight that I bought another reel for the new 4 weight. I have not had a chance to test the new reel out yet. But trust me, that day is coming soon. If anyone is in the market for a new reel, check out the Lamson Velocity, you won’t be disappointed. Buster |
