I started planning my upcoming fishing trips for this year with the fishing club, Middle Tennessee Fly Fishers and some personal trip. Many of my trips are solitary trips in which I am fly fishing from my kayak. I really am going to try and track my fishing shots this year. I have been buying USGS Topographic Maps for my local waters, Caney Fork River and Elk River. I was trying to search which maps I need to cover the waters, so I thought I would get on the USGS website and that is what I did. After toying around on the website some, I found the map locator and I found and zoomed in on the river.

After clicking around, I made a mark on the river, so I am thinking I am marking locations for mileage, etc. But when I clicked on the mark again to move it or remove it, I pop-up came up and gave me the name of the map and next to that it said “Download”. I was at work while I was doing this, so I might as well. If something goes wrong, I can always call our IT Guy (aka Knuckle Draggin’ Gorilla) and blame it on something else.

I now have the topographic maps for the rivers I plan on fishing this year: Caney Fork River, Elk River, Watauga River, Hiwassee River, and White River. I even got a few maps on rivers I might try to squeeze a fishing trip in too.

If you are an avid hiker, climber, or general outdoorzy and you need or enjoy looking at maps and planning your next trip, get on the USGS website and download your maps for free. I must tell you, the maps are in PDF and they are typically a very large file size (6 to 7 Mb). But with today’s computer and hard drives, you should have plenty of room.

Here is good place to start looking for maps. USGS Map Locator

Maybe you can find you next home away from home campsite or our favorite new fishing hole.

Cool. Topo maps are also useful for mtb trails. They will show you how much climbing you can expect.
