This past summer I modified my kayak for fishing. I installed a fly rod holder in the front, installed nylon pad eyes, etc. Before I modified my kayak, I used to secure a milk crate in the rear molded in area in the back of the kayak. The milk crate was important. I had the fly rod holder attached to the side and I used an old soft sided cooler for to carry fly boxes, leaders, tippets, and other things. Now that I modified kayak, I needed to find something new to carry the fly boxes, tippet, leaders, split shot, strike indicators, and etc. I started looking at dry bags and then boat bags. I finally decided on a boat bag; I purchased a Simms Dry Creek Boat Bag in Medium. At first I wasn’t sure about my purchase, but after loading it up and going on my first trip, I knew this was a good buy. The boat bag is approximately 13” x 17” x 10”. From the internet, here are the highlights: • Exterior features 420 denier, double coated polyurethane nylon • Interior features 70 denier, single coated polyurethane nylon • Foam body prevents heat from radiating up from the bottom of the boat into the bag • Water resistant, non-corrosive zipper seals out spray • Pockets include map or tippet pocket, side pockets, clear vinyl pocket on lid interior • Velcro® interior divider can be configured to accommodate fly boxes • Includes shoulder strap and carrier handle This bag carries everything I need and some things I don’t need. Here is my list of things I carry: 1. 3 Large Fly Boxes 2. 4 Small Fly Boxes 3. Other Fly Boxes (Small) 4. 4 or 5 Leaders 5. 8 Spools of Tippet 6. Fly Line Cleaner and Cloth 7. Split Shot 8. Foam Strike Indicators 9. Yarn Strike Indicators 10. Lie Detector (Retractable Measuring Tape) 11. Folding Scissors 12. 2 Knives 13. Knot Tying Tools 14. Thermometer 15. Fly Fishing Lanyard 16. Dry Fly Floatant 17. Fly Drying Powder 18. 1 Pair of Sunglasses 19. 1 Drying Cloth 20. 1 or 2 Fly Fishing Reels 21. 1 Spare Spools with Sinking Fly Line 22. Fishing License 23. 1 Hook File / Sharpener 24. 1 Mini-Flashlight 25. 1 Headlamp 26. 1 Fly Rod Holder (When not installed on the kayak) 27. 4 Scupper Stoppers (When not installed on the kayak) 28. Spare Socks 29. First Aid Kit 30. Sunscreen 31. A Roll of Toilet Paper 32. Extra Zip-Lock Bags 33. Straps with Snap Clips 34. Spare Webbing 35. Small Dry Bag (1 Liter Sea To Summit Bag) This is great boat bag / gear bag. If you are in the market for a new dry gear bag, give the Simms Dry Creek Series Boat Bags a serious look. When ever I go fishing, this bag goes with me. I probably carry too much gear with me, but better to have it, than not to have it when you need it. Comments
