I'm thinkin about getting a cyclocross bike for general commuting and pulling my son around. Does anyone have any suggestions for something cheap but relatively good? Thanks.

I've heard really good things about Raleigh bikes in general when looking for affordability.

I was commuting on my mountain bike (Marin), but that was only 8 miles roundtrip. I think anything over 10 you'd want a bike made for commuting.

Wade is right. If you will be commuting for 10 plus miles you will want a commuting bike. A cyclocross bike is basically a road bike with a few differences in dimensions. So if you commute on a cyclocross, you will be in a hunched over position. Just my .02

Well now I'm thinking I'll just convert my mountain bike. Maybe throw some fenders on, a rack, spokey dokes. Has anyone done this or is it totally lame? I have a Gary Fisher Tassajara, any suggestions?

I thought about doing a conversion but wanted to keep my mtb trail ridable too. So I just rode the mtb to work and carried a backpack with a change of clothes, deodorant, and a spare tube. I also put a flashing rear light and headlight on it so people would see me... even in the daytime.

The only lame part is all of the hassle it would be if you wanted to hit the trails. I guess it would be cheaper to buy a spare set of rims and tires than an extra bike, that way if you wanted to do some trail riding you could just switch wheels and take off the fenders. BTW if you are only riding 2-3 miles, you could ride a tricycle, so I wouldn't rule out a cyclocross, beach cruiser, chopper, whatever. There is a mentally challenged guy that rides one of those old Schwinn banana seat bikes all over the J-town area. Don't forget to wear protection

abenson, thanks.....I guess? I haven't been hitting the trails too much lately anyway except to run (what real men do). It's probably a good thing though, I can't handle the intense arguments about how somebody cut out a log jump just for a race.

yeah, it's been three weeks and thats rare for me. The arguments may have something to do with it. I would like to think that I am used to taking some time off in the winter and I ran all winter. I may be a little burnt out right now and the arguing on kymba just topped it off.
