Hey fellow Outdoorzies and Nomads, I'm on a quest. This fall once the season is done in Alaska, I want to do at least a month, maybe longer, in an awesome backcountry area. As it will be late fall and I'll be setting out with a relative newcomer to our lovely world of extended backcountry living, I'm looking for something challenging but not spirit breaking, staggeringly beautiful and rugged but with a reasonable 'out' and re-supply points along the way. We'll have all the gear we need by then but I'd like to stay in the south-ish to avoid miserably cold nights as much as possible. So what i'm asking is this: any awesome suggestions for us to consider? Some great place you know of? Maybe the southern section of the AT? Let me know. Thanks gang.

I just did 50 miles of the AT in the smokies. Check my trip report out for details. There are some great places in the smokies, but I'm thinking you could hike the entire AT through the smokies in a few weeks. You could always start out at NOC (nantahala outdoor center) and then head up through the smokies and on to hot springs NC to end it and soak in the springs.

I did basic training in Ft. Leanordwood, MO, which is close to the Ozarks. I have always said I would love to go back there some day when I could enjoy it.
I think the part of the AT Wade is talking about would be nice too. You could go farther south down into GA if you waited late and were worried about the weather.
What part of Alaska are you in again?, looks like I may be going soon.
