Hello all in Outdoorzy land, especially my friends on here and my soon to be friends!
Well, like the subject line says, I had my first climbing competition today. I just recently got back into climbing (after my Joshua Tree trip if you guys remember the trip report) and my buddy GentsRugby talked me into trying the comp. I figured I might learn something, and might even do well.
I really screwed up on the second climb, I went for this stupid hold when I had 2 others I could have easily gotten and I fell 2 feet from the top. The next two climbs were fairly difficult, and I only made it halfway. In the end I got 10th out of 16 competitors. Hey, it wasn't last place. But I could have done so much better! On a good note though, I had been working on a few things all week like breathing well, moving fluidly, precisely and to just relax. I wanted to use more backsteps, rest more on the way up when I reached good holds, and to try and plan a route before climbing on. Well I did it all except plan the route, I try to, but once I get 1/3 of the way up, I forget everything. I for sure hit all of my other goals though, and was complimented by others on how well I did them. So that made me feel good.
Afterwards I volunteered to judge women's and men's A, and that was awesome. Met a lot of great people, got to watch some really good climbers up close and learn, and got to help out one of my favorite hang out spots; the Alaska Rock Gym.
But once again, not having a vehicle is killing me. I didn't get to stay for the awards ceremony because my ride said it was time to go. Real bummer. I wish I either had the Jeep I want, or lived in town and could take the bus. And I keep thinking, "Yea, no problem! I'll be in the top 5 next year!" Eh, probably not. I'll probably be in Afghanistan, missing another year of outdoorzy opportunities. But once I get out, being a dirtbagging photographer is going to be totally righteous.

congrats on your first comp, but i think even more congrats are due for the fact that you got to climb in Jtree i heard that place is fantastic.
glad you had a good time. I don't think climbing should ever be about beating someone, its just to personal of a sport for that. I guess comps are just a bunch of people coming out and climbing at the same time, which is cool but you gotta watch out for that competitiveness ruining the beauty of the sport: an individuals intimate, harmonious, and graceful interaction with the rock

Congrats on your first competition. One good thing about any competition, even if you aren't competitive in nature, is that it gives you a good excuse to train alot.
