Hello all, here is a quick question for all you skateboarders.
I am in the middle of opening up a bicycle shop in a town that has a large skating population and no skate shop. We are considering adding a small line of skateboards and accessories, but here is the problem. I am a skateboard idiot. The manager I am bringing is used to be a hard core skater, but has kind of dropped out of the scene for a couple of years.
As of right now we are considering bringing in Santa Cruz and Baker boards, and Vans shoes, but are looking for some suggestions on other brands (both boards and accessorys) that you would like to see in a local shop. What do you guys ride now, and if you could ride anything, what would your ride?

There's a few skateshops in town man. Home on Bardstown road. And there's one or two down by the skate park. But there isn't one out east though. Which is where I'm assuming your shop is, based on the name. I'd hit one of them up, play dumb. Inquire about what to get your cousin who just started skating last year, ect. Do alittle espionage.
My nephews a cool hip skaterkid, I'll ask him what all the kiddies are dying to get their hands on these days....Things have changed alot since I was skating around a decade ago. So I'm lost. I don't even know if kids these days know the song 'American Jesus' *siiigh*

Check out consolitatded... or Eastern Skate Supply. They can get you any / every thing you need to get open. As you grow you can add a few more brands. Of course, the downside is that consolitaded / ESS has what every other shop has. As you grow you need bread and butter products, but then things you can't get at the PacSun in the mall.
As you do grow be SURE to add variety! If you want to see how NOT to run a shop take a drive down to BG and look around. Look online, see how succesful shops work, what lines they carry.. Most successful shopw will have 2 "versions" of every product. One the safe, brand name one that a mom will buy a kid... and two the louder, local, core, whatever version.

Not naming names, I'm not trying to "hate". But BG's shops, while impoving I must admit, still lack quite a bit. One does stand out from the rest, head and shoulder, but again not naming names. It's natural to understand in a town who's skate culture just basically went from 0-60 overnight when their park got build. (I know I know we got some og's who skated there forever. I myself was ticketed by Western't Finest back in the day) It's probably best, if that park had been there back in my day my grades would certainly sufferd.
A skate shop is not a daycare.
Shop owners / employees should know what they are talking about.
Don't sell things that I could buy at the mall for cheaper.
Quit trying to lump skating in with all things "extreme"
