Hi, I joined a few weeks ago, but have just now had a little time to explore the site. I am currently trying to find the motivation and time to start tackling my climbing desire (rock, ice, mountaineering). Finding it more difficult these days to "get'r done" though with a 2 year old and full time job. I would love to start now though and introduce our daughter to it when she is older. I am hoping to find a little motivation, education, connections, kick in the bum from the site. Thanks!

Yeah Welcome!
We have quite a few climbers and mountaineers on here that would love to help. And it sounds like you won't have any trouble finding something to climb where you're at.

Any Alpine Clubs nearby?
They are a great place to meet other outdoorzy types that love mountains!

Thanks for the welcomes.
I have worked a little towards my goal. I went to the rock gym for my first time, took a class, and got belay certified. I had never approached rock climbing because my heart was always in the ice/mountaineering arena. Much to my surprise though, it felt more natural than I thought. Plus the rock climbing part (at least the gym) is easier to access and work into. (I live an hour away from the gym though, so not sure how feasible it is for me to go on a regular basis.)
nwoods - We have a couple of clubs up here. Our local AAC is not very active and is expensive to join. So I have put that membership off until later. However, we do have a Mountaineering Club of AK which is a lot more active and accessible. So I have joined and looking forward to trying to make a meeting or two (again they are a little over an hour away from where I live). It does seem to be a good outlet to check into though.
My current inner debate about going into this is coming from my wife/mother side. The whole debate of having a family now and weighing in on the time, safety and costs of the endeavor. A heavy subject.
Thanks for "listening".

I think the idea of joining groups could be beneficial in more ways than one. Maybe even joining more than one group and doing group climbs when you get a chance. My experience with climbing is that some of the expense can be offset when you are part of one of these groups. You can all share gear and buy used gear off one another. Which can ease some of the guilt of spending loads of money to get into it. I remember when i was climbing back in college. My roommate had alot of gear and I mostly used his. I also went with a group of people who would supply the rope, and often do the driving to the rock. Plus climbers tend to be fun people to hang out with anyway.
Heck, sometimes they would just give me gear. I still use the ATC belay device that was given to me back in the day.

I don't know much about Girdwood, but I know if you want to make that hour drive up here to Anchorage and hit up the rock gym, you'll always have me. I'll climb with anyone anytime. I have plenty of friends who go, too. We all love road trips, too. Pick a place and we'll climb. I'd love to climb the cliffs at Turnagain Arm this summer. Seems like a good central location for us. I don't have any extra gear, but we can trade off between climbs if we have to. Let me know if you're interested.

Thanks, AT. I may take you up on that offer if I find a good schedule to get me to the gym. I would like to try climbing outside though too. So maybe if I can't find time to get to the gym this winter, I'll focus on getting outside time this summer.
I scored gear today! Received a free pair of Koflach plastic mountaineering boots from a connection with the MCA membership (and met a great "name" in AK mountaineering too).

Good to hear. I drove halfway to Girdwood today with my friend out of boredom today. About froze from the wind on one of those lookouts. I saw a few people out ice climbing the cliffs at Turnagain. The ice crystals are so cool there. They look like jade. Yea though, hit me up when you want to climb. Like I said, whenever, wherever. (Within reason, the army constricts my freedom to some degree. But I try to rebel as much as possible.)
