Tried to post this but f'ed up... so here it is again.
I usually carry at least 4 or 5 knives (a fetish I have...), a can of pepper spray when I remember it (not to spray others with, but to spray myself with, so when a bear tries to eat me I will taste really bad), and a small .22 cal. handgun I inherited for on of LETSKUNGFU's past, bad relationships. I don't think of these things as self defense items, but as things I can use when that situation of "Oh shit here I am again and that squirrel looks really tasty right now) time arises. I guess the best advise I can give is bring a friend and be sure you can run faster then they can.....

Solo, thats about all I do(cant find others to go with me)I always have my 3.5" pocketknife plus a 22" machete on the side of my pack.I will take a firarm with me on my extended stays in the back country, but its more for food than protection.Honestly I dont fear much in the woods, its the cities that I hate to travle into...

I have always carried a knife. In one instance my friend and I hiking down a mountain ran across some people poaching bear in the Shenandoahs. It was about 11pm and we were hiking via headlamps. Upon seeing their lights we turned ours off and made our way very slowly around them knives in hand. I must say I would have felt alot safer if I had, had a gun.

The below story from the New York Times does not tell the whole story. Geoffrey Hood was my cousin and he was shot three times in the back with his own gun that he packed for self protection. He and his fiancée would probably have been killed anyway. The murderer had seen the gun in Geoffrey’s pack the day before. He was alone with them in the shelter and took the gun from the pack, shot Geoffrey and raped and stabbed her. Sometimes you just can't protect yourself enough.
"Ms. LaRue, of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Mr. Hood, of Signal Mountain, Tenn., were killed in their sleeping bags in a trail shelter near Duncannon, Pa., a rural community about 10 miles north of Harrisburg. Ms. LaRue was repeatedly stabbed. Mr. Hood was shot three times. "
