By now I am sure most of you have heard of the most recent backpacking tragedy. If not, poke your head out of the cave for a minute. This deserves attention and we need to come up with better ways of deterring this.
Some people carry pepper spray, some people carry knives, some even carry a gun. I have carried just about everything, but with everyone trying to cut down their weight, some people don't carry anything at all for personal protection. As much as I hate to say it, this is a very bad idea. When hiking alone or in a small group always hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

I prefer an AK-47 but for the weight savings and knockdown potential you just can't beat a Bazooka.

An M-4 Carbine is an amazing weapon, with a collapsable stock and shortened barrel it fits snugly on the daisy chain of a backpack.
Of course there's the Desert Eagle .50, *whoa*
I usually carry a knife and use my training for self defense....yea I'm a badass.

A knife.
Note that the number of kidnappings, murders and the like are very low for those on the trail. The media has once again sensationalized one particular female hiker who was murdered by a sadist who has supposedly murdered two others over the course of a few years. You have a greater chance of being mauled by a bear -- which is a very low chance -- and eaten, than being stalked and killed or kidnapped.

I know of 3 bear maulings in 2007, and two in 2006. There was a couple killed in Pisgah in October and now the girl that is being "sensationalized". I don't know bout dem facts.

I don't go ANYWHERE without at least one knife on me. As the old Nordic saying goes, "A man without a knife, is a man without a life." I'd probably carry a pistol too if I actually went out and bought one. Hate to be the guy that brought a knife to a gun fight. It's not like I'm Remo Williams or something...

I vote knife for most situations. When in bear country I've slacked though. I've always said I'd take bear spray, but then when I'm actually out there I don't.
Sidenote to the tragic murder. The authorities are looking at the instance with the couple in Pisgah, along with a FL killing. They think this dude may have done all three.

I always carry a knife and if needed I could use it. I think it is likely safe to say though that if it is our time it is our time. A knife, or any other weapon, likely wouldn't have saved the girls life. The cowardly shit probably ambushed her as is the case in most crimes of this type. I don't think any of us walk with our knife in our hands and being Canadian I definitley can't carry a gun on the trails here...at least not legally
It is to bad there are sick people out there making it harder for the rest of us to enjoy life.

i always have a knife, or usually... but its not for self defense. never worried about that at all. I just like to be able to cut my food, or open things.
