On Morehead campus tonight, Melissa and i were out for an evening stroll to get us out of the house and to do something active. We heard loud music and saw a large group of students gathered in front of the University Student Center. We were going to walk on by but curiosity consumed us. We had actually just passed by when I said "yeah, let's go and see what they're up to." So, we go down to a table that has a sign hung on it; "REGISTRATION!" Whereupon we're told that the SAC [Student Activities Council] is hosting a benefit one mile race to help people in need. What an amazing idea! All they're asking is the donation of a coat or jacket which will be given to local people in need. I think it over for maybe 45 seconds before pulling my marmot driclime off and throwing it in their barrel. Melissa, without a jacket suitable to donate, wanted to run anyway. A friend from her past was like "If you want to do it, I'll donate one of my jackets!" We were on for the run! So, we go back to the apartment, put on less clothes and get ready for a one mile race at 21:00 in 35 degree weather. We return to the start/finish at 20:35 and there was a huge crowd of people there. I was amazed! At least fifty students showed up to run, most of them donning minimal skivvies and running shoes accompanied by a glow necklace provided by SAC. The entire cross country and track teams showed up as well as members of several greek organisations. I was thoroughly impressed with the turnout, great job SAC & MSU Students! Hopefully this is something that will see an increase in the future; both charitable events and activity that promotes good health and will.
