You should hit both in one road trip... but summer is the wrong time. early spring or fall. The oppresive summer heat will melt your rubber to the rocks.

there are some good rides to and from as well.

Kungfu's right, we tried it in '03 in the end of June & it was already scorching. We were going to go to Joshua Tree NP over spring break, maybe we should detour?

When are you planning to go out there?
I'm heading to Fruita in May to ride the kokopelli trail. 145 miles through the desert. I'm pretty excited.
If we are out there at the same time, we should meetup

I am going to Moab in the spring, no ifs ands or buts. Here is the agenda; I have to ride slickrock, well, just because. Then I am going to do my research and also speak with the local bike rental store on a trail "of the beaten path", kind of a local favorite. The next day, turning in the rental bikes and hiking Canyonland and or Arches. I should be able to do this and only take a Friday and Monday off work, maybe a Tuesday so It isn't rushed. This is going to no frills, staying in a cheap hotel and maybe camping on BLM. Booking flight as soon as the dates are decided.

You should definitly do slickrock... Just because, you have to, it's a rite of passage. Day 2 you should try and do the full Porcupine. It's not that "undercover local" trail but it's rad. You could get shuttled up and enjoy the long long long long downhill. Besides, getting directions to the secret stash out of a Moab bike shop employee is like getting you first girlfriend's mom to teach you how to undo a bra clasp. Fruita is super fun too, and depending where you fly to, could be worked in. Great camping right on the trails. Super easy for adding a night ride!

How does April sound? Is that a good time as far as weather goes?

We are back from our Moab trip. We hit Amasa Back, Slickrock, and Porcupine Rim. We also did some hiking in Canyonlands and Arches National Park. Trip reports will follow soon.
